The hike from the summit of Pirongia down to the base, via the Hihikiwi track was lovely. There were some good sections of mud but these were interspersed with board walks and stairs. No views today but just so good to be in the bush.
Again, we had not a clue were to camp for the evening and couldn't find water anywhere. After flagging down the only vehicle we could find we were sent to a local farmer's house where we were warmly welcomed. We camped in the woolshed and had dinner with Rob the farmer. The dinner arrangement was "you can come have fresh fish for dinner if you cook it"...sounded like an excellent plan.
For other Te Araroa's, there is apparently a spring of water not far from the start of the 10hr track to Waitomo, from Honikiwi road...and you can also pitch at the end of the road in what is described as a small carpark.
