Hanging out in Taumarunui and National Park for the day today. Had a great night with the mum of a girlfriend of Hannah's and have headed to National Park for a nice night before we start the river. Pretty mixed weather today but it made for a relaxing day. It is a little disconcerting when Aunty E comments that there are funky smells coming from the room, despite us both showering and washing clothes. Turns out it was the dehydrated broccoli! New boots arrived today, out with the old, in with the new. What a treat to have tread again...and to start all over again with creating that sickly sweet toe jam smell that comes from months of wet feet. Watch this space.
We were given advice that the river trip from Taumarunui to Pipiriki is particularly scenic, therefore, we are being flexible with our route and changing things up a bit. Look at us being flexible. We will head into the river early and as a result we will end up missing some of the National Park section. This is an area we have hiked many times before and will do many times again but it is less likely that we will do the long haul river paddle again. We are pretty excited to be able to spend a number of days on the Whanganui river...no reception though so will blog upon completion.
