Necessity is indeed the mother of invention. It's amazing how limited food results in interesting food adventures, some good some not so...today's was a treat. Porridge, honey, sunflower seeds and nutmeg. Give it a try, we think this one will taste good even when not desperate in the bush.
We have really enjoyed the Pureora forest thus far. There are huge trees, stunning views, and so much bird life. We were woken this morning by the kakapo dawn call, airy and beautiful. When hiking in the Pureora forest you need to have your wits about you as some parts are less well marked than others. We had quite a few back tracks as there are heaps of animal tracks that make it difficult to follow the correct path. It appears that DOC have done a massive amount of work in the forest lately as the tracks are clearer and better maintained than anticipated. The improved track quality means times are faster than scheduled which is also a welcomed treat at the end of the day. There were also lots of places you could pitch your tent between all three huts if the need arose, as well as beautiful streams to take a dip or purify some water.
